Market Summary

New York equities fell for a second straight session, extending the prior day's losses with much heavier selling today. The S&P 500 closed down 1.21% at 7,408.30, the Nasdaq lost 2.15% to 25,137.69, and the Dow slipped 0.97% to 51,711.65 (Reuters). Two triggers did the damage. First, Alphabet and Tesla delivered the earnings the market had been waiting for the previous evening. Revenue beat expectations, but ballooning AI capex was confirmed and both names sold off sharply (CNBC). Second, oil. Yemen's Houi (an armed faction based in Yemen) attacked a Saudi oil tanker, sending Brent crude (the international oil benchmark) back above $100 a barrel for the first time in two months (Bloomberg). Rising energy prices revived inflation and rate-hike fears. On top of that, the Trump administration rolled out new tariff measures, adding a layer of policy uncertainty (BBC). The VIX (volatility index) jumped 12.86% to 18.78, and the Fear & Greed Index slipped from 43 to 40, remaining in "Fear" territory.

Sectors & Assets

Today was a textbook rotation day. Money that fled mega-cap tech — which is pouring capital into AI — rotated into industrials and defensive healthcare, both of which backed up the move with solid earnings.

Expert Commentary

> "Even with Alphabet delivering a Q2 beat, raising its capex outlook has reignited concerns about the sustainability of the AI investment cycle. A clear sense of caution is spreading across global markets."

> — Karl Schamotta, Chief Market Strategist at Corpay

> "I don't view AI beneficiaries as expensive. But the buying has become far too concentrated. When momentum investors crowd to one side of the boat, sharp selloffs like today's become inevitable."

> — Andrew Slimmon, Senior Portfolio Manager at Morgan Stanley Investment Management

> "Higher oil and gasoline prices weaken the consumer and the economy, while also complicating the position of central banks fighting inflation."

> — Sameer Samana, Senior Global Market Strategist at Wells Fargo Investment Institute

> "This quarter ranks among the strongest revenue-growth periods Alphabet has posted over the past five years."

> — Alison Porter, Portfolio Manager at Janus Henderson

Technical Signals & Outlook

Technical signals registered today split exactly down the middle: 120 bullish, 120 bearish — a market that cannot make up its mind. Hard-hit Tesla and Alphabet landed on the "RSI Oversold" (a signal that the short-term drop has been excessive) and "Lower Bollinger Band Break" lists, putting them in position for a tactical bounce. Meanwhile, today's leaders — RTX and Thermo Fisher — flashed "Overbought" readings, suggesting they may need to catch their breath. Ticker-level signals can be reviewed in the Technical Signals Report. For beginners, the easiest way to remember today is simple: companies "spending on AI" got punished, while companies "earning from AI" got rewarded.
