Market Summary

U.S. stocks saw the rotation out of technology accelerate again on Tuesday. The Nasdaq Composite, which at one point traded down 3.5% intraday, clawed back losses to finish 0.97% lower at 25,678, while the S&P 500 slipped 0.26%. In contrast, the Dow gained 0.17% to close roughly flat as capital flowed into defensives and value names. A two-day semiconductor rebound from the prior session evaporated in a single session, with Marvell ($MRVL -7.61%), Qualcomm ($QCOM), and ARM ($ARM) sold off again. After strong employment data, fears that tomorrow's Consumer Price Index (CPI) could also print hot triggered profit-taking in AI-related and high-multiple names. The Volatility Index (VIX) climbed 4.4% to 19.75, and the Fear & Greed Index slumped to 33, underscoring a further deterioration in investor sentiment.

Sector & Asset Trends

The dispersion across sectors was pronounced. Amid risk aversion, money rotated into defensive and value groups such as Real Estate ($XLRE +2.13%), Materials ($XLB +1.62%), and Healthcare ($XLV +1.26%), while the once-leading Technology sector ($XLK -1.85%) was the weakest and Energy ($XLE -1.61%) also declined on a pullback in crude prices. This is a textbook tech-to-value rotation. A stronger bid for safety drove inflows into Treasuries, pushing long-end yields lower, while oil gave back part of its weekend surge. Late in the session, however, geopolitical risk resurfaced after a U.S. Army Apache helicopter was shot down over the Strait of Hormuz and President Trump hinted at a response.

Key Stock Moves

Defensive and value sectors led the upside, with Amphenol ($APH +7.29%), Blackstone ($BX +5.34%), Thermo Fisher Scientific ($TMO +5.20%), and Home Depot ($HD) posting sharp gains. Semiconductors, by contrast, rolled over again as selling in tech stocks resumed, sending Marvell ($MRVL -7.61%), AppLovin ($APP -7.60%), Corning ($GLW -7.25%), ARM ($ARM), and Qualcomm ($QCOM) tumbling. Apple ($AAPL) also slid about 3% on news that its new AI voice assistant "Siri AI" will not launch in the EU due to antitrust scrutiny from the European Union. Meanwhile, with SpaceX's record-breaking IPO on the horizon, the broader tech complex adopted a wait-and-see stance.

Expert Commentary

> "Energy market volatility is broadening the distribution of returns, but risk assets are supported by strong macro and micro fundamentals and the AI-led capex cycle."

> — Serena Tang, Head of Cross-Asset Strategy, Morgan Stanley

> "Now is the time to take profit. Our Bull & Bear indicator has hit the sell signal of 8.0, with 7 out of 10 bear-market indicators triggered."

> — Michael Hartnett, Chief Investment Strategist, Bank of America

Technical Signals & Outlook

While the Magnificent 7 broadly entered stochastic oversold territory — suggesting tech selling has been excessive — a cluster of MACD death crosses remains on the major tech charts, keeping the trend tilted bearish. Defensives and financials are already stretched into overbought territory, making tomorrow's CPI print the key dividing line for whether this rotation extends.
