Previous Session Recap

The previous session on Wall Street saw all three major indexes rise in unison. The S&P 500 climbed 0.32%, the Nasdaq gained 0.66%, and the Dow added 0.30%, with Technology (0.94%) and Communications Services (0.77%) leading the charge. By contrast, Energy fell 1.66% on a sharp drop in international crude prices, while Consumer Staples lost 1.06%, as money rotated out of the defensive sectors. Among single stocks, $AMD rose 4.91% and Marvell Technology gained 4.84%, while Palo Alto Networks and CrowdStrike each pulled back around 3% ahead of their earnings releases.

Current Market Tone

Futures are directionless. Dow futures are up 0.06%, whereas S&P 500 futures are off 0.06% and Nasdaq 100 futures are down 0.17%, leaving only a modest temperature gap between indexes. It is neither a risk-on nor a risk-off tape; it is a wait-and-see market. Two factors drive the backdrop. The first is inflation: if core PCE stalls at 3.3%, the gap to the Fed's 2% target stays intact, and the September rate-hike debate reignites. The second is the Strait of Hormuz: Iran-Oman talks have pushed oil prices lower for a second straight day, easing some of the inflation pressure. The single biggest variable today is $NVDA earnings, due after the close.

Pre-Market News Roundup

Today's Events

Macro Calendar

Estimate of 3.3%, in line with the prior reading of 3.3%. This is the number the Fed weighs most heavily; a print above 3.3% would lift September rate-hike odds once again.

Estimate of 0.2%, an acceleration from the prior reading of 0.1%. The key question is whether the monthly trend re-accelerates.

Estimate of 3.6%, below the prior reading of 3.7%. Lower oil prices should pull the headline number modestly lower.

Estimate of 0.1%, flipping positive from the prior reading of -0.1%.

Estimate of 1.5%, unchanged from the prior release. Unless revisions are sizable, the market's focus will stay squarely on inflation.

This measures the growth rate of consumer spending itself rather than prices. Estimate of 0.1%, a deceleration from the prior reading of 0.3%. If prices cool while spending cools as well, the debate over the growth outlook quickly follows.

A consumer sentiment gauge compiled by the Conference Board. The release time and estimate have not yet been announced for this round.

Dividend Ex-Dates

Stocks in Focus

Broadcom's Relative Strength Index (RSI) has dropped to 34.8, putting it near oversold territory. Shares trade at $356.74 and slipped another 0.56% yesterday. With $NVDA earnings set to reset expectations across the AI chip complex, Broadcom's direction also hinges on the overnight result.

Merck sits at the opposite extreme. It closed yesterday up 3.84% at $156.45, with an RSI of 77.6 and a tag of the upper Bollinger Band (a band drawn around a moving average to show volatility ranges). Two short-term overbought signals are flashing at the same time.

Visa has an RSI of 70.4 paired with a break above the upper Bollinger Band. Shares continue to grind higher from $384.14, but on the indicators alone this is not a spot to chase.
