Pre-Market Briefing — August 24, 2026
오늘 한눈에
Previous Day Recap
Last Friday, U.S. stocks closed with the Dow up 0.98% at 53,277, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq both gained 0.43%. At the sector level, Materials led the way with a 2.14% rise, followed by Health Care and Consumer Discretionary, while rate-sensitive Utilities lagged 2.28%. On a weekly basis, however, the Dow slipped 0.8%, the S&P 500 fell 1.4% and the Nasdaq dropped 2%, snapping a three-week streak of gains.
Current Market Sentiment
Futures action is mixed across indices. Dow futures are flat, while Nasdaq 100 futures are off by roughly 0.5%, indicating risk-off flows concentrated in tech names. Treasury Secretary Bessent signaled fresh sanctions targeting Iranian crude exports, pushing money into safe-haven assets, and gold climbed to its highest level in three months. Long-term Treasury yields are also sitting at multi-year highs, weighing on richly priced stocks relative to earnings. The biggest swing factor today is the batch of earnings from Chinese e-commerce and EV names due out before the open.

Stocks to Watch
Tesla rose 4.86% last Friday to close at $362.86, breaking above the upper Bollinger Band (a band that shows the range within which a price typically moves). Its Relative Strength Index (RSI, a 0-to-100 indicator comparing the strength of recent gains and losses) sits at 58, well below overbought territory, leaving room for further upside. Walmart tells the opposite story. Its RSI has slid to 29.6, putting it in oversold territory, and the $103.70 print slipped below the lower Bollinger Band as well, a sign that heavy selling has piled in over a short stretch — safer to wait for confirmation of a bounce before stepping in. Merck is the hottest of the three. It gained 2.39% on Friday to $152.55, with an RSI of 77.9 pushing it above the upper Bollinger Band. Chasing it here means positioning for a near-term pullback.
