Pre-Market Briefing for August 18, 2026
오늘 한눈에
Prior Session Recap
All three major indexes fell in New York yesterday. The S&P 500 slipped 0.52% and the Dow lost 0.51%, while the Nasdaq held up relatively better with a 0.32% decline. A rise in oil prices lifted only the energy sector, which gained 1.08%, while communication services and consumer staples fell 1.89% and 1.64%, respectively. Memory chip stocks moved in the opposite direction, with SanDisk surging 8.88% and Marvell jumping 5.54%.
Current Market Mood
Risk aversion is clearly in play. Iran has signaled a full-scale offensive stance, and the June memorandum of understanding has expired as it stood. Brent crude has broken through the $90-per-barrel mark. With oil prices reviving inflation concerns, the 30-year US Treasury yield has climbed to around 5.3%, hitting its highest level since 2007. Rate-sensitive growth stocks were hit first: Micron, Marvell and Intel are all trading lower pre-market, and SanDisk and Western Digital, which soared yesterday, have given back more than 5%. Compared with Dow futures, which have only lost 0.15%, selling pressure is concentrated in tech names.

Stocks to Watch
Chevron rose 1.35% yesterday and broke through the upper Bollinger Band, the boundary marking the top of its recent trading range. The Relative Strength Index (RSI, a measure that expresses recent gains versus losses on a scale of 0 to 100) stands at 67.1, just shy of overbought. With crude above $90 a barrel, the stock is worth watching first as a bellwether for the energy sector. SanDisk rocketed 8.88% and broke above the upper band, with RSI at 61.1, still leaving some room to run. However, with more than 5% already given back pre-market, the key is whether it can hold on to yesterday's gains. Merck's RSI is at 68.9 and it has also pushed through the upper Bollinger Band. It is a signal that shows whether money is flowing into defensive names on a day the broader index is being pressured.
