Previous Session Recap

The previous day on Wall Street ended with the S&P 500 up 0.38% and the Nasdaq up 0.90%, as cooling consumer inflation boosted technology stocks. The Dow, however, managed only a 0.02% gain after IBM plunged more than 25% on an earnings warning and the healthcare sector was dragged down 1.93%. Semiconductor stocks provided a floor under the indexes, with SK Hynix depository receipts alongside Micron and Nvidia posting strong gains.

Current Market Tone

Futures on all three indexes are trading marginally higher by around 0.2%, extending the risk-on mood sparked by the prior session's cooler consumer-price data. The gains are limited, however, leaving the market in a cautious stance. Today's biggest variable is the Producer Price Index due at 9:30 p.m. Korean time, which will test whether wholesale inflation is cooling in tandem with consumer prices and reshape expectations for further rate hikes. Remarks from Fed Governor Waller at his confirmation hearing and pre-market heavyweight earnings could also sway sentiment, meaning a wait-and-see mood is likely to dominate until the data lands.

Pre-Market News Roundup

Today's Events

Pre-Market Releases

$ASML — A barometer of the AI and memory investment cycle. Whether second-quarter revenue guidance of €8.4 billion–€9.0 billion is met and commentary on equipment demand will set the direction for the semiconductor sector as a whole.

$JNJ — The consensus calls for EPS of $2.85 on revenue of $25.05 billion. Pharmaceutical-segment momentum and any revision to full-year guidance will be the key points.

$MS — The focus is on a recovery in trading and investment-banking fee revenue. Net inflows into the asset-management business will also be closely watched.

$BLK — Assets under management and net new flows are the core metrics. The pace of money migrating into ETFs will make or break the results.

Post-Market Releases

$UAL — Summer peak-season travel demand and fare levels are the focal points. Fuel-cost pressure and second-half guidance are additional variables that could move the stock.

Macro Calendar

The Producer Price Index, which tracks wholesale inflation, is expected to come in at 6.2% year-over-year, a deceleration from the prior 6.5%. On a month-over-month basis, the forecast is 0.0%, a sharp cool-down from the previous 1.1% surge. If wholesale inflation cools on the heels of the prior day's consumer-price data, expectations that inflation has peaked will gather steam.

Excluding the volatile food and energy components, the core index is expected to rise to 5.2% year-over-year from the prior 4.9%. The month-over-month figure is seen at 0.4%, unchanged from the prior reading. A rebound in core inflation could leave rate-hike caution in play even as the headline figure eases, making the divergence between the two readings the critical takeaway.

Names to Watch

Financials are today's technically notable group. JPMorgan has pushed above the upper Bollinger Band at $342.89, with its Relative Strength Index (RSI) climbing to 64.9, positioning it as the bellwether for the bank-earnings season. Goldman Sachs broke out above the upper band after surging 9% the prior day, but with an RSI of 67.5 it is approaching overbought territory, suggesting that waiting for a pullback may be more effective than chasing strength. On the other side, Oracle has slipped into oversold territory with an RSI of 25.5 after falling 2.74% the prior day, making it worth watching whether the steep decline draws in short-covering buyers.

Today's Action Plan

Stay calm and have a great day.
