Previous Day Recap

Yesterday (5/27), the Dow, S&P 500, and Nasdaq all simultaneously set new record highs, but the semiconductor sector, which had surged roughly 6% the prior session, paused for profit-taking. Qualcomm ($QCOM -6.18%), ARM (-5.76%), and Marvell ($MRVL -4.59%) dropped sharply, while Consumer Discretionary ($XLY +1.76%), Meta ($META +3.74%), and Amazon ($AMZN +2.48%) led the gains. In post-close earnings, Snowflake ($SNOW) rocketed 33% in extended trading on a $6 billion AWS deal and strong guidance, whereas Salesforce ($CRM) slipped 3% on a soft Q2 revenue outlook, producing mixed results. WTI crude plunged an additional 5.55% on stabilizing US-Iran ceasefire hopes.

Current Market Mood

As of Thursday evening KST, US futures are trading slightly lower and cautious ahead of tonight's PCE release. S&P 500 futures -0.1%, Nasdaq 100 futures -0.3%, Dow futures -59 points, suggesting risk appetite has taken a brief pause. An additional burden: WTI oil rebounded 2% to around $90 per barrel after reports that US forces carried out fresh strikes on Iranian military facilities overnight. The biggest variable today is unquestionably the April Core PCE release at 9:30 PM KST (consensus YoY 3.3%), and with Costco ($COST) and Dell ($DELL) earnings after the close on top of that, volatility is set to accumulate throughout the session.

Pre-Market News Roundup

Today's Events

Although earnings season is in its final stretch, today features several large-cap names split across BMO and AMC. Setting aside auto card details, the curated list below covers the following four names.

Macro Calendar

Today brings PCE inflation, the week's biggest inflection point.

The April core PCE, the Fed's most-watched inflation gauge, is expected at 3.3% YoY (vs. prior 3.2%) and 0.3% MoM, with markets already pricing in the possibility that inflation has become stickier. Headline PCE is forecast at 3.8% YoY (vs. prior 3.5%), reflecting accumulated energy and tariff impacts. Also released at the same time: Q1 GDP second estimate (consensus 2.0%) and weekly initial jobless claims (consensus 210,000). If results print above consensus, the hawkish burden on the new Fed Chair appointee will increase, further reinforcing expectations for a June pause.

Consensus 665,000 (vs. prior 682,000). A supplementary indicator to check housing demand momentum amid sustained high rates.
