Pre-Market Briefing for April 20, 2026
Today at a Glance
Market Sentiment
After all three major indexes hit record highs simultaneously last Friday, futures markets are showing mild weakness on profit-taking ahead of the Monday, April 20 open. S&P 500 futures are down 0.59%, Nasdaq futures are down 0.58%, and Dow futures are off 0.70%, raising the prospect of a technical pullback following the record run. Asian markets also saw early profit-taking on Friday, with Japan's Nikkei down 1.75% and Hong Kong's Hang Seng down 1.01%. With a full-blown earnings season kicking off this week, heightened volatility is expected.
Today's Events
Earnings reports are scheduled with two before the open and seven after the close. Before the market opens, $CLF (Cleveland-Cliffs) reports at 10:00 ET, followed by $BOH (Bank of Hawaii) at 10:45 ET. After the bell, large-cap names $STLD (Steel Dynamics, 16:30 ET), $AGNC (AGNC Investment, 16:01 ET), $WTFC (Wintrust Financial, 16:05 ET), $ZION (Zions Bancorporation, 16:10 ET), and $BOKF (BOK Financial, 16:03 ET) are slated, making regional bank earnings the focal point. Net interest margins (NIM) and commercial real estate loan quality are expected to be the key items to watch for the regional banks.
On the economic data front, the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index is set for release. As the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, the print could prompt a re-pricing of the rate-cut path depending on the outcome.
Review of Friday's Close
On Friday (April 17), all three major indexes notched record highs after Iran declared the Strait of Hormuz open. The S&P 500 broke above 7,100 for the first time, gaining 1.20% to close at 7,126.06, while the Dow surged roughly 1,000 points (+1.79%). The Nasdaq extended its longest winning streak since 1992, finishing up 1.52%. View Friday's market recap
Stocks in Focus
$NFLX (Netflix) — Friday's results topped consensus on both revenue and EPS, but the stock plunged 9.75% amid fallout from Reed Hastings's departure from the board. Today's regular session will be telling on whether dip-buyers step in to re-rate the name or selling pressure continues.
$XOM · $CVX (Energy majors) — Both names fell alongside oil prices after the Strait of Hormuz reopening sent crude tumbling more than 7%. With the Bollinger Band lower edge breached and stochastic oversold signals flashing, a technical bounce could be in the cards if oil prices stabilize.
$TSLA (Tesla) — Q1 results are due after Wednesday's close. Consensus EPS stands at $0.40, but with already-disclosed India delivery volumes coming in below expectations, margins and guidance will be decisive. As one of the most heavily shorted names, expect two-way volatility around the release.
