US Stock Market Summary – August 10, 2026
오늘 한눈에
Market Summary
All three major indexes edged lower. The S&P 500 fell 0.06% to 7,753.11, the Nasdaq dropped 0.32% to 26,605.36, and the Dow slipped 0.11% to 53,975.98. The momentum from Friday's record-high close came to a halt in a single day. The trigger was a setback in negotiations over the Strait of Hormuz (a key chokepoint for Middle Eastern oil). Iran attached conditions including sanctions relief and compensation (Reuters). In response, international crude prices jumped more than 3% (WSJ). Higher oil prices translate into higher inflation. With the July Consumer Price Index release due midweek, the market felt the pressure. On top of that, Cleveland Federal Reserve President Beth Hammack said it would take more than a single interest-rate hike to bring inflation down (Yahoo Finance). As Treasury yields rose, equities were pushed down. The VIX (volatility index) climbed 3.69% to 15.45. The Fear & Greed Index (an investor-sentiment thermometer) stands at 64, signaling "Greed."
Sector & Asset Trends
Performance across sectors split along oil prices. As oil prices rose, money flowed into companies whose profits benefit. Conversely, money pulled out of dividend stocks, which are sensitive to interest rates, and high-priced tech names. This movement of capital across industries is called a rotation.

Expert Commentary
> "A single 25-basis-point (0.25 percentage point) rate hike typically does not have a major impact on the economy. So it will likely take several, and we don't want to precommit to a number."
> — Beth Hammack, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland
> "When the situation with Iran is this fluid, it becomes extremely difficult to make strategic investment decisions."
> — King Lip, Chief Strategist at BakerAvenue Wealth Management (from a Reuters interview last month)
Technical Signals & Outlook
Today's technical signals were evenly split, with 120 bullish and 120 bearish (out of 240 total). On the upside, heavily advancers such as Microsoft ($MSFT) and Palo Alto Networks ($PANW) triggered overbought (short-term overheated) signals. On the downside, dividend names like Duke Energy ($DUK) and Southern Company ($SO) broke below the lower Bollinger Band (a band that charts the range of price fluctuation). It was a day where dividend stocks got hit first as rates rose. Individual stock signals can be viewed at Today's Signals. Today is best remembered as "a day stocks took a breather as oil prices climbed." Tomorrow, the only things to watch are whether oil keeps rising and this week's July Consumer Price Index release.
