Market Summary

All three major indexes rallied sharply. The Nasdaq gained 2.13% to 25,913.90, the S&P 500 climbed 1.48% to 7,600.50, and the Dow rose 1.32% to 53,178.41, closing at record highs (MarketWatch). This marks a third consecutive session of gains, following the previous trading day on July 31. The catalyst was Iran. President Trump called off an attack on Iran and signaled that negotiations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz were in the works (WSJ). West Texas Intermediate crude for September delivery dropped more than 5% (CNBC). However, Iran denied that any negotiations were scheduled. On the macro side, New York Federal Reserve President Williams said he expects inflationary pressures to gradually ease (Reuters). The jobs report is due this Friday. The VIX (volatility index) fell 1.19% to 15.80. The Fear & Greed Index (investor-sentiment thermometer) stands at 46, signaling "Neutral."

Sector & Asset Movers

The sharp drop in oil prices produced opposite effects across sectors. Industries where oil is a cost headed higher, while those where oil is a revenue source fell. Combined with a rebound in large-cap technology names that reported earnings last week, a rotation of capital from defensive stocks into growth names became clearly visible within a single session.

Key Stock Movers

Large-cap pharmaceutical names such as Eli Lilly (-2.39%), AbbVie (-2.33%), and Merck (-1.87%) also weakened. On a day when risk capital returned, defensive names were sold first — a classic pattern.

Expert Commentary

> "Every morning, everyone checks oil and the 10-year Treasury yield first. When they fall, the market is fine. When they rise, the market is in trouble."

> — Art Hogan, Chief Market Strategist at B. Riley Wealth

> "The biggest doubt heading into earnings season was whether the large cloud companies would dial back their AI spending. Amazon and Microsoft sent no such signal, and that gave the broader market a much wider sense of relief."

> — Mark Hackett, Chief Market Strategist at Nationwide

Technical Signals & Outlook

Technical signals were evenly split: 120 bullish versus 120 bearish (out of 240 total). On the surface, it's balanced — but a closer look reveals a tilt. Microsoft and Amazon, both big winners today, simultaneously triggered RSI overbought readings and upper-band Bollinger Band breakouts. On the other side, defensive names like AbbVie and Merck printed MACD death crosses (bearish-turn signals). The leading names are overheating while the lagging names are turning bearish, so confirming whether this trend extends one more day is essential (View the Technical Signals Report). For beginners, the easiest way to remember today is: "war worries faded, and stocks rallied." Tomorrow, just check whether oil rises again.
