Market Summary

01
New York stocks closed lower across the board on July 20, with all three major indices falling for a third straight session. The S&P 500 ended down 0.19% at 7,443.28, the Nasdaq down 0.05% at 25,508.07, and the Dow down 0.59% at 51,839.26. The trigger was the Middle East. US airstrikes on Iran entered their ninth day (Yahoo Finance). Yemen's Houthi forces declared a maritime blockade on Saudi Arabian oil exports. Brent crude briefly crossed $90 a barrel for the first time in over a month before pulling back to $88.30 (Reuters). Reports that Iran had received a de-escalation proposal through an intermediary helped limit the losses. Rates were also a drag. The 10-year Treasury yield rose to 4.56%, and the 30-year crossed the 5% line. On top of that, the market sat on its hands ahead of this week's earnings from Alphabet, Tesla, and Intel (MarketWatch). VIX (the volatility index) fell 0.69% to 18.64, and the Fear & Greed Index sat at 38, in "Fear" territory.

Sector & Asset Moves

02
Today's rotation was straightforward. Oil rose, so energy was the lone standout winner. Rates rose, so dividend-paying defensive sectors got sold off across the board. Eight of eleven sectors declined, and only tech — which had plunged last week — managed to lift its head.
Energy (+0.45%) — As Iran tensions escalated, fears of oil supply disruption grew, making it the only clear winning sector (Yahoo Finance).
Tech (+0.07%) · Semiconductors SOXX (+0.45%) — Memory chips, which had plunged last week, led the rebound, though they gave back much of their late-day gains (Bloomberg).
Healthcare (-1.14%) — Big-cap drug stocks fell in unison, making it the worst-performing sector. This is the classic pattern of defensive sectors getting hit first when rates rise.
Utilities (-0.51%) · Real Estate (-0.42%) — These are capital-intensive sectors, so when rates rise, their interest burden grows. The 30-year breaking 5% hit them directly.
Bonds TLT (-0.72%) · IEF (-0.32%) — Falling bond prices mean rising yields. The 10-year hit 4.56% and the 30-year crossed the psychologically important 5% level (Reuters).
Crude USO (+1.25%) · Copper CPER (+1.32%) · Silver SLV (+0.39%) · Gold GLD (-0.22%) — Crude reflected geopolitical risk one-for-one. Gold, meanwhile, edged lower, meaning the safe-haven bid hadn't really kicked in.
Small caps IWM (-0.59%) — Small caps carry more debt than large caps, making them more vulnerable to rising rates. They fell harder than the large-cap indices.

Notable Movers

03
Gainers
Alibaba (BABA) +4.67% — The company unveiled a trial version of its own AI model, "Qwen 3.8 Max." It reportedly has 2.4 trillion parameters, putting it in the top tier of models. Reports that it was chosen as Apple's AI partner in China added to the rally (Benzinga).
Marvell Technology (MRVL) +3.32% — Semiconductors, which had plunged last week, came back to life, with the most beaten-down names bouncing first.
SanDisk (SNDK) +2.59% — On expectations of firmer NAND flash (storage memory chip) pricing, memory stocks rebounded in unison (24/7 Wall St.).
Microsoft (MSFT) +2.21% — Money rotating out of semis moved into the Magnificent 7 (the seven mega-cap tech stocks). This is the flip side of the $3 trillion that has flowed out of the semiconductor sector since June 22 (Yahoo Finance).
Micron (MU) +2.04% — On analyst views that DRAM (working memory chip) supply tightness will persist, Micron joined the rebound.
Decliners
Oracle (ORCL) -3.98% — S&P Global cut its credit rating to BBB-. The fact that roughly half of its $638 billion order backlog is concentrated in a single customer, OpenAI, was flagged as a risk. Brokerage CLSA also initiated coverage with a Hold view, arguing that as much as $500 billion in additional funding could be needed through 2030 (Benzinga).
Tesla (TSLA) -2.96% — Cautious selling emerged ahead of the company's earnings release on the 22nd. Continued delays to its robotaxi (driverless taxi) targets remain a drag (Yahoo Finance).
Eli Lilly (LLY) -2.73% — As defensive sectors broadly sold off on rising rates, big-cap pharma names fell in sympathy.
AstraZeneca (AZN) -2.59% — Along with Novartis (NVS), foreign pharma stocks also sold off. This explains why healthcare was the day's worst-performing sector.
Toronto-Dominion Bank (TD) -2.51% — Within a weakening financial sector, Canadian megabanks fell in unison. Royal Bank of Canada (RY) was also down 2.35%.

Expert Commentary

05
> "Investors will be watching to see whether earnings can justify the elevated valuations. They'll also be watching to see whether the recent pullback extends into a deeper decline, or whether it's just a pause in the AI-led rally."
> — Daniela Hathorn, senior market analyst at Capital.com
> "AI is entering a new phase. The market is moving from pricing potential to pricing execution. Investors should focus less on who is using AI the most, and more on who is generating measurable returns from that investment."
> — Jeff Buchbinder, chief equity strategist at LPL Financial
> "The Gulf situation was the dominant story in March, April, and May, and it's still very important now. But something broader is unfolding."
> — Sammy Shah, chief economist at Lombard Odier
> "As confidence in the safety of the strait continues to erode, the market will increasingly have to price in a longer supply disruption."
> — Lu Ming Pang, vice president of gas and LNG research at Rystad Energy

Technical Signals & Outlook

06
Today's scan picked up 240 technical signals, split exactly down the middle: 120 bullish and 120 bearish. That tells us the market hasn't chosen a direction yet. The standout is energy. Valero (VLO) and Marathon Petroleum (MPC) have entered overbought RSI territory (a signal that a stock has risen too far, too fast), meaning much of the oil rally is already priced in. On the flip side, Oracle and Tesla showed up on the oversold (a signal that a stock has fallen too far, too fast) list, leaving room for a bounce (View the technical signals report). If today's session can be summed up in one line: "Semis lived, but oil and rates dragged the market down." Tomorrow, all you have to watch is whether oil reclaims $90 — that alone tells you half the story.
